Beach Umbrella; Cultural Stereotypes in Design

(This article was originally posted in July 2017 on old website.)

Let’s take a close look at the well made “STRAW-WOOD combo” beach parasol.  I’ve been murmuring about hotel designs, landscaping, sustainable aspects……., and now what?

These are very beautiful but I don’t know how many of you had questioned “Are you sure that you were in Bali?” by seeing this “Tiki” style umbrella.

Tiki style is from Polynesian islands, these are not traditional Indonesian (or Balinese) design which supposed to be made with fabric in vivid colors. So, what all these Tiki umbrellas are doing here? The guess is that designers simply filled this private beach with Tiki style, based on the stereotype idea of tropic islands in French Polynesia.

Indonesia isn’t in Polynesia, it’s just this hotel is “French” chain. Because of that, we look like that we were in Bora Bora.
