We love Shepherd’s pie, but due to the animal fat content, the authentic one with 100% beef, milk, and butter in mashed potato is a little too much for my children. So I thought of adjusting the ratio of ingredients, this deconstructed SHEPHERD’S PIE was created.
I use just a little of ground beef for flavoring and fill with grains and vegetables, kids really love this dish. Let’s say, beef would be about 10%, rest are Barley, Rice, Millet, Garlic, Carrots, and Onions,
Because of the limited amount of beef, I wanted a bold flavor. Indian inspired ground beef was the perfect idea to mix with veggies and Grains. For this, I use Cumin, Turmeric, Garam Masala, Ginger, Smoked Paprika, and Black Pepper. And it’s “topped with” mashed potato, instead of covering it all over with. It actually is much enjoyable than meaty ones, barley observes meat flavor and the chewy texture is very satisfying.
